ALONG THE DRAC,THE CHAMPSAUR'S MOST FAMOUS
WATERWAY
A river steeped in history.
Formed by the meeting of the Drac Blanc and the Drac Noir, the Drac
is a high-volume river used by a number of rafting companies and
popular with canoeing and kayaking enthusiasts. Its steady course
provides a succession of excellent waves which during the spring
thaw appear as rollers. With its flow determined by both snow-melt and
rainfall, and influenced by the meeting of both Mediterranean and
Atlantic weather systems in this transitional area between the
Southern and Northern Alps, the water level of the Drac can
change rapidly according to its water flow - as an example, in the mid
section of the vast Champsaur valley which it irrigates, it can either
flow comfortably, spreading out along several branches through this
stony landscape, or gang up in a foaming mass. Renowned for its
fertility since Antiquity, the Champsaur saw Napoleon pass through
the Drac valley as he made his way to Paris to seize power
